Troy was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when he was in high school in 1994. His father was an accomplished boxer and kickboxer, and after seeing the first UFC, was impressed with the ease standup fighters were submitted on the ground. Troy and his father began traveling over 2 hours each way to train with Craig Kukuk and then Renzo Gracie when he came to the U.S. From 1996-2000 while Troy attended college in NJ, he continued training at the Renzo Gracie Academy, and additionally 3x/week with Karel.
In 2000 upon graduating Farleigh Dickinson University (magna cum laude) with a degree in Entrepreneurial Studies, Troy started competing in BJJ/submission grappling, and medaled in each tournament he entered.
In 2001-2009, life took hold and Troy couldn’t train much, but he missed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and the camaraderie of the academy. In 2010 Troy came back to continue this martial art. He had remained in touch with Karel and found a great place to train at the Silver Fox BJJ Academy. Within just months of starting up training at Karel’s academy he began competing again and has been met with success:
